PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the correlation admission albumin levels and 30-day readmission after hip fracture surgery in geriatric patients. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 1270 geriatric patients admitted for hip fractures to a level I trauma center were included. Patients were stratified by clinical thresholds and albumin level quartiles. The association between admission albumin levels and 30-day readmission risk was assessed using multivariate logistic regression and propensity score-matched analyses. The predictive accuracy of albumin levels for readmission was evaluated by ROC curves. The dose-response relationship between albumin levels and readmission risk was examined. RESULTS: The incidence of 30-day readmission was significantly higher among hypoalbuminemia patients than those with normal albumin levels (OR = 2.090, 95%CI:1.296-3.370, p = 0.003). Furthermore, propensity score-matched analyses demonstrated that patients in the Q2(35.0-37.9 g/L) (OR 0.621, 95%CI 0.370-1.041, p = 0.070), Q3(38.0-40.9 g/L) (OR 0.378, 95%CI 0.199-0.717, p < 0.001) and Q4 (≥ 41 g/L) (OR 0.465, 95%CI 0.211-0.859, p = 0.047) quartiles had a significantly lower risk of 30-day readmission compared to those in the Q1(< 35 g/L) quartile. These associations remained significant after propensity score matching (PSM) and subgroup analyses. Dose-response relationships between albumin levels and 30-day readmission were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Lower admission albumin levels were independently associated with higher 30-day readmission rates in elderly hip fracture patients. Our findings indicate that serum albumin may assist perioperative risk assessment, and prompt correction of hypoalbuminemia and malnutrition could reduce short-term readmissions after hip fracture surgery in this high-risk population.

Albuminuria is a crucial urine biomarker of human unhealthy events such as kidney diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes. However, the accurate diagnosis of albuminuria poses a significant challenge owing to the severe interference from urine fluorescence and urine drugs. Here, we report a novel flavone-based fluorescent probe, DMC, by incorporating the FA1-targeting methylquinazoline group into a flavone skeleton with the extend π-conjugation. DMC exhibited a rapid response time, high sensitivity, and selectivity towards human serum albumin (HSA) in urine. Moreover, the red-shifted fluorescence and the FA1-targeted HSA-binding of DMC efficiently mitigated the interference from both urine fluorescence and urine drug metabolites. Furthermore, the establishment of a portable testing system highlighted the potential for point-of-care testing, offering a user-friendly and accurate approach to diagnose A2-level and A3-level albuminuria. We expect that the success of this DMC-based diagnostic platform in real urine samples can signify a significant advancement in early clinical diagnosis of albuminuria and its associated diseases.

The relationship between baseline serum albumin level and long-term prognosis of patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unknown. This is a sub-analysis of the CLIONE (Clinical Outcome Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) study. The main outcomes were: death or orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT), liver-related death, and liver-related events (hepatocellular carcinoma [HCC], decompensated cirrhosis, and gastroesophageal varices/bleeding). 1383 Japanese patients with biopsy-confirmed NAFLD were analyzed. They were divided into 3 groups based on serum albumin: high (>4.0 g/dL), intermediate (3.5-4.0 g/dL), and low (<3.5 g/dL). Unadjusted hazard ratio [HR] of the intermediate albumin group, compared with the high albumin group, were 3.6 for death or OLT, 11.2 for liver-related death, 4.6 for HCC, 8.2 for decompensated cirrhosis, and 6.2 for gastroesophageal varices (all risks were statistically significant). After adjusting confounding factors, albumin remained significantly associated with death or OLT (intermediate vs. high albumin group: HR 3.06, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.59-5.91, p < 0.001; low vs. high albumin group: HR 22.9, 95% CI 8.21-63.9, p < 0.001). Among biopsy-confirmed NAFLD patients, those with intermediate or low serum albumin had a significantly higher risk of death or OLT than those with high serum albumin.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Behcet's disease (BD) is an autoimmune systemic inflammatory disease, and its exact pathogenesis is unknown. There are currently no specific tests to evaluate the disease activity of BD, making its management more difficult. This study aims to determine the neutrophil/albumin ratio (NAR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) to albumin ratio (CAR) and investigate their associations with clinical findings in patients with BD and to determine optimum cutoff levels of CAR and NAR. METHODS: The study included 75 consecutively recruited patients with BD with a mean age of 33.29±6.23 years and disease duration of 7.21±4.64 years, as well as 75 healthy participants. Clinical characteristics and laboratory data were obtained. Disease activity was assessed using the BD current activity form score (BDCAF). RESULTS: NAR and CAR were elevated in patients with BD compared with those of healthy controls (NAR: 1.08±0.34 vs. 0.607±0.06, CAR: 2.49±1.73 vs. 0.39±0.142; p<0.0001), as well as in active BD versus inactive BD. Both NAR and CAR were significantly correlated with CRP, active uveitis, and BDCAF score (p≤0.05). In patients with active BD, the cutoff value of NAR was >0.9744 (sensitivity: 89.74%, specificity: 80.56%), while that of CAR was >2.04 (sensitivity: 74.36%, specificity: 83.33%). CONCLUSIONS: NAR and CAR are both elevated in patients with BD and may contribute to its active state. NAR and CAR can be feasible and inexpensive markers for predicting BD activity.

AIM: Testing for systemic inflammation markers is considered a simpler method for diagnosing periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). Changes in the C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CRP/Alb ratio) and C-reactive protein/fibrinogen ratio (CRP/Fib ratio) are associated with PJI. This study aimed to evaluate the application of CRP/Alb and CRP/Fib ratios as novel inflammation-based markers for the diagnosis of PJI. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 445 patients who underwent total hip and knee revision arthroplasties between January 2010 and February 2021. Of these, 129 patients were also independently evaluated for PJI with coagulation-related comorbidities. The patients were divided into two groups: the aseptic revision (268 patients) and PJI revision groups (187 patients). Subsequently, we evaluated the diagnostic value of the CRP/Alb and CRP/Fib ratios compared to other inflammation-based diagnoses using the area under the curve (AUC) values. RESULTS: The AUC values of the CRP/Alb and CRP/Fib ratios were 0.880 and 0.872, respectively, suggesting similar diagnostic potentials for PJI. The CRP/Alb and CRP/Fib ratios were better than the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), Alb, and Fib, whose AUC values were 0.765, 0.352, and 0.730, respectively, for the diagnosis of PJI. The optimal cut-off for the CRP/Alb ratio was 0.13, with good sensitivity (85.0%) and specificity (78.4%). The optimal cut-off CRP/Fib ratio was 2.04, with good sensitivity (81.3%) and specificity (80.6%). Notably, the CRP/Alb and CRP/Fib ratios had the highest sensitivity, followed by four conventional inflammatory markers, namely, CRP, ESR, Alb, and Fib, which had sensitivities of 80.2%, 67.4%, 50.8%, and 54.0%, respectively. Similar findings were observed in patients with coagulation-related comorbidities. CONCLUSION: Both the CRP/Alb and CRP/Fib ratios were significantly higher in patients with PJI than in those with aseptic failure and showed better sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing PJI than classical inflammatory markers.

Abnormal levels (high/low) of urinary human serum albumin (HSA) are associated with a number of diseases and thus act as an essential biomarker for quick therapeutic monitoring and biomedical diagnosis, entailing the urgent development of an effective chemosensor to quantify the albumin levels. Herein, we have rationally designed and developed a small fluorogenic molecular probe, (Z)-2-(5-((8-hydroxy-2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H,5H-pyrido[3,2,1-ij]quinolin-9-yl) methylene)-4-oxo-2-thioxothiazolidin-3-yl) acetic acid (HJRA) with a twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) property, which can easily self-assemble into nonfluorescent nanoaggregates in aqueous solution. However, HJRA nanoaggregates can selectively bind with serum albumin proteins (HSA/BSA) in ∼100% PBS medium, thereby facilitating the disassembly of nanoaggregates into monomers, exhibiting a clear turn-on red fluorescent response toward HSA and BSA. Analysis of the specific binding mechanism between HJRA and HSA using a site-selective fluorescence displacement assay and molecular docking simulations indicates that a variety of noncovalent interactions are responsible for the disassembly of nanoaggregates with the concomitant trapping of the HJRA monomer at site I in HSA, yielding a substantial red emission caused by the inhibition of intramolecular rotation of HJRA probe inside the hydrophobic cavity of HSA. The limit of detection (LOD) determined by the 3σ/slope method was found to be 1.13 nM, which is substantially below the normal HSA concentration level in healthy urine, signifying the very high sensitivity of the probe toward HSA. The comparable results and quick response toward quantification of HSA in urine by HJRA with respect to the Bradford method clearly point toward the superiority of this method compared to the existing ones and may lead to biomedical applications for HSA quantification in urine. It may also find potential application in live-cell imaging of HSA.

Sulfur mustard (HD) is a highly toxic vesicant and is prohibited by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). HD can modify human serum albumin (HSA) to generate hydroxyethylthioethyl (HETE) adducts, which could be utilized as biomarkers for verifying HD exposure in forensic analysis. Here, five amino acid adducts generated from pronase digestion of HD-exposed human serum albumin (HD-HSA) in plasma were selected as biomarkers to retrospectively detect HD exposure. HD-HSA was precipitated from plasma with acetone, digested by pronase, derivatized with propionic anhydride (PA), and analysed with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-TQ MS). The limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) of the HD exposure concentrations were evaluated as 1.00 ng/mL at S/N≥3 and 3.00 ng/mL at S/N≥10, respectively, which are approximately 60 times lower than those of the reported method. The approach shows good linearity (R2≥0.997) from 3.00 ng/mL to 10.0 µg/mL of HD-exposed human plasma with satisfactory precision and accuracy. The developed approach was applied to analysing samples from the 6th OPCW Biomedical Proficiency Test (BioPT). The study showed that the developed approach was also suitable for analysing human plasma samples that were exposed to six of HD analogues, which were common impurities in sulfur mustard mixtures. Moreover, the method was successfully applied to plasma from other species, including rabbits, rats and cattle. This study provides a reliable and sensitive tool for the retrospective detection of vesicants exposure based on multiple biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Low serum albumin is known to be associated with mortality in sepsis, as it reflects effects of nutrition, catabolism, and edema. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association of albumin levels with in-hospital mortality in adults with sepsis, stratified by age groups. METHODS: This nationwide retrospective cohort study comprised patients admitted with sepsis to intensive care units in seven tertiary hospitals during 2003-2011. Only patients with available serum albumin levels at hospital admission and one week after were included. Patients with an intra-abdominal source of sepsis were excluded. The association between sepsis and mortality was analyzed using multivariate logistic regression models. RESULTS: The study included 3967 patients (58.7% male, median age 69 years). Mean serum albumin levels were 3.1 ± 0.7 g/dl at admission and 2.4 ± 0.6 g/dl one week later. In a multivariate logistic regression model, serum albumin one week after admission was inversely associated with in-hospital mortality (odds ratio [OR] 0.64, 95% confidence interval 0.55-0.73 per 1 g/dl). In an age-stratified analysis, the association was stronger with younger age (OR 0.44 for patients aged < 45 years, 0.60 for patients aged 45-65 years, and 0.67 for patients aged > 65 years). Serum albumin on admission was not associated with in-hospital mortality. CONCLUSIONS: The decline in serum albumin one week after admission is a stronger predictor of mortality in younger patients. Older patients might have other reasons for low serum albumin, which reflect chronic co-morbidity rather than acuity of disease.

Although extracts are broadly used in order to support the treatment of numerous diseases, only in a limited number of cases is the process of applying and establishing their mechanisms of action scientifically analyzed. Fruits of Cornelian cherry are an abundant source of iridoids, anthocyanins, flavonols and phenolic acids. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro bioactivity of red and yellow Cornelian cherry fruits' extracts. The biological potential of extracts, in a broad sense, involved antioxidant activity in relation to phosphatidylcholine liposomes, inhibitory ability against α-glucosidase and acetylcholinesterase enzymes, as well as interactions with human serum albumin. Studies showed that both extracts were more effective in protecting liposome membranes against free radicals produced by AAPH in an aqueous environment due to the fact that they can be better eliminated by the hydrophilic components of the extracts than those produced by UVB radiation. Extracts exhibited inhibitory activity against acetylcholinesterase and α-glucosidase, wherein loganic acid extract showed noncompetitive inhibition of the enzyme. Moreover, extracts binded to albumin mainly through hydrogen bonds and van der Waals forces. Taken together, red and yellow cherry fruits' extracts exhibit diverse biological properties and can be exploited as a source of natural therapeutic agents.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Due to some interconnectedness at the molecular level, this study assessed the possible influence of laboratory parameters associated with systemic inflammatory environment on programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: We assessed effects of c-reactive protein (CRP), albumin, haemoglobin, neutrophil, and lymphocyte levels on PD-L1 expression in NSCLC. Patient data were obtained retrospectively from LUCAS, the Czech registry of patients with lung carcinomas. Correlations of two continuous parameters (PD-L1 expression and laboratory parameters) were analysed by correlation coefficient. Differences in continuous parameters between two or more groups were tested by Mann-Whitney or Kruskal-Wallis tests. Independence of two categorical parameters was tested by chi-square test. RESULTS: We demonstrated no influence of the investigated laboratory parameters on PD-L1 expression in NSCLC, either in continuous or categorical division of variables. CONCLUSION: Inflammatory laboratory parameters at time of NSCLC diagnosis are unlikely to affect the determination of PD-L1 expression.

The role of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance is being questioned in alcoholic cirrhosis because of the relative low HCC risk. This study aimed to assess the risk and predictors of HCC in Korean patients with alcoholic cirrhosis by using competing risk analysis. A total of 745 patients with alcoholic cirrhosis were recruited at a university-affiliated hospital in Korea and randomly assigned to either the derivation (n = 507) and validation (n = 238) cohort. Subdistribution hazards model of Fine and Gray was used with deaths and liver transplantation treated as competing risks. Death records were confirmed from Korean government databases. A nomogram was developed to calculate the Alcohol-associated Liver Cancer Estimation (ALICE) score. The cumulative incidence of HCC was 15.3 and 13.3% at 10 years for derivation and validation cohort, respectively. Age, alpha-fetoprotein level, and albumin level were identified as independent predictors of HCC and incorporated in the ALICE score, which discriminated low, intermediate, and high risk for HCC in alcoholic cirrhosis at the cut-off of 60 and 100. The risk of HCC can be stratified by using a combination of readily available clinical parameters (age, AFP level, and albumin level) in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis.

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with rhodamine B and capped with curcumin are used for the selective and sensitive fluorogenic detection of human serum albumin (HSA). The sensing mesoporous silica nanoparticles are loaded with rhodamine B, decorated with aminopropyl moieties and capped with curcumin. The nanoparticles selectively release the rhodamine B cargo in the presence of HSA. A limit of detection for HSA of 0.1 mg/mL in PBS (pH 7.4)-acetonitrile 95:5 v/v was found, and the sensing nanoparticles were used to detect HSA in spiked synthetic urine samples.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer is the gynecologic tumor with the highest fatality rate, and high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) is the most common and malignant type of ovarian cancer. One important reason for the poor prognosis of HGSOC is the lack of effective diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. New biomarkers are necessary for the improvement of treatment strategies and to ensure appropriate healthcare decisions. METHODS: To construct the co-expression network of HGSOC samples, we applied weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) to assess the proteomic data obtained from the Clinical Proteomic Tumor Analysis Consortium (CPTAC), and module-trait relationship was then analyzed and plotted in a heatmap to choose key module associated with HGSOC. Subsequently, hub genes with high connectivity in key module were identified by Cytoscape software. Furthermore, the biomarkers were selected through survival analysis, followed by evaluation using the relative operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. RESULTS: A total of 9 modules were identified by WGCNA, and module-trait analysis revealed that the brown module was significantly associated with HGSOC (cor = 0.7). Ten hub genes with the highest connectivity were selected by protein-protein interaction analysis. After survival and ROC analysis, ALB, APOB and SERPINA1 were suggested to be the biomarkers, and their protein levels were positively correlated with HGSOC prognosis. CONCLUSION: We conducted the first gene co-expression analysis using proteomic data from HGSOC samples, and found that ALB, APOB and SERPINA1 had prognostic value, which might be applied for the treatment of HGSOC in the future.

Hypoalbuminemia is associated with poor outcome in patients undergoing surgery intervention. The main aim for this study was to investigate the incidence and the risk factors of postoperative hypoalbuminemia and assessed the impact of postoperative hypoalbuminemia on complications in patients undergoing brain tumor surgery. This retrospective study included 372 consecutive patients who underwent brain tumors surgery from January 2017 to December 2019. The patients were divided into hypoalbuminemia (< 35 g/L) and non-hypoalbuminemia group (≥ 35 g/L) based on postoperative albumin levels. Logistic regression analyses were used to determine risk factors. Of the total 372 patients, 333 (89.5%) developed hypoalbuminemia after surgery. Hypoalbuminemia was associated with operation time (OR 1.011, P < 0.001), preoperative albumin (OR 0.864, P = 0.015) and peroperative globulin (OR 1.192, P = 0.004). Postoperative pulmonary imaging abnormalities had a higher incidence in patients with than without hypoalbuminemia (41.1% vs 23.1%, P = 0.029). The independent predictors of postoperative pulmonary imaging abnormalities were age (OR 1.053, P < 0.001), operation time (OR 1.003, P = 0.013) and lower postoperative albumin (OR 0.946, P = 0.018). Pulmonary imaging abnormalities [OR 19.862 (95% CI 2.546-154.936, P = 0.004)] was a novel independent predictors of postoperative pneumonia. Postoperative hypoalbuminemia has a higher incidence with the increase of operation time, and may be associated with postoperative complications in patients undergoing brain tumor surgery.

The stomach is the main digestive organ in humans. Patients with gastric cancer often develop digestive problems, which result in poor nutrition. Nutritional status is closely related to postoperative complications and quality of life (QoL) in patients with gastric cancer. The controlling nutritional status (CONUT) score is a novel tool to evaluate the nutritional status of patients. However, the relationship of the CONUT score with postoperative complications, QoL, and psychological status in patients with gastric cancer has not been investigated. The present follow-up study was conducted in 106 patients who underwent radical gastrectomy in our hospital between 2014 and 2019. The CONUT score, postoperative complications, psychological status, postoperative QoL scores, and overall survival (OS) of patients with gastric cancer were collected, and the relationship between them was analyzed. A significant correlation was observed between the CONUT score and postoperative complications of gastric cancer (P < 0.001), especially anastomotic leakage (P = 0.037). The multivariate regression analysis exhibited that the CONUT score (P = 0.002) is an independent risk factor for postoperative complications. The CONUT score was correlated with the state anxiety questionnaire (S-AI) for evaluating psychological status (P = 0.032). However, further regression analysis exhibited that the CONUT score was not an independent risk factor for psychological status. Additionally, the CONUT score was associated with postoperative QoL. The multivariate regression analysis exhibited that the CONUT score was an independent risk factor for the global QoL (P = 0.048). Moreover, the efficiency of CONUT score, prognostic nutrition index, and serum albumin in evaluating complications, psychological status, and QoL was compared, and CONUT score was found to outperform the other measures (Area Under Curve, AUC = 0.7368). Furthermore, patients with high CONUT scores exhibited shorter OS than patients with low CONUT scores (P = 0.005). Additionally, the postoperative complications (HR 0.43, 95% CI 0.21-0.92, P = 0.028), pathological stage (HR 2.26, 95% CI 1.26-4.06, P = 0.006), and global QoL (HR 15.24, 95% CI 3.22-72.06, P = 0.001) were associated with OS. The CONUT score can be used to assess the nutritional status of patients undergoing gastric cancer surgery and is associated with the incidence of postoperative complications and QoL.

Fluorescent 3-[(E)-(2-phenylhydrazinylidene) methyl]-1H-indole (PHI) was synthesized by condensation of indole-3-carboxaldehyde and phenyl hydrazine in presence of acetic acid and ethanol and after spectral characterization used further to prepare its aqueous nano suspension by reprecipitation method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as stabilizer. The average particle size of nano suspension measured by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) was found 77.5 nm while FESEM microphotograph showed spherical morphology. The blue shift in the absorption spectrum and stokes shifted fluorescence of nanosuspension of PHI compared to its monomer spectrum in dilute solution indicate formation of H-type aggregate by face to face overlapping of the molecules.The aggregation induced enhanced emission (AIEE) of PVP capped nanosuspension of PHI is increased appreciably by presence of aqueous solution of human serum albumin (HSA). A suitable mechanism of molecular binding interactions based on complex formation between PHI nanoaggregate and HSA through PVP is proposed. Fluorescence life time, zeta potential and particle size data of PHI nanoparticles (PHINPs) obtained in presence of different amounts of HSA are in support of molecular interactions leading to complex formation. The molecular docking studies showed that HSA and PVP capped PHINPs exhibit strong hydrogen bonding interaction. The fluorescence enhancement effect induced in PHI nanosuspension is used further to develop analytical method for quantitative estimation of HSA in aqueous biological sample solution.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of the maternal serum albumin (MAlb) level with fetal growth and fetal growth restriction (FGR) risk in term-born singletons. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Four hospital maternity units of the Tongji Maternal and Child Health Cohort study initiated from September 2013 to April 2016 at Wuhan City, in central China. PATIENT(S): A total of 3,065 mother-offspring pairs. INTERVENTION(S): None. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Fetal growth was evaluated by birth weight (BW) and birth length. Fetal growth restriction was defined as BW below the 10th percentile. RESULT(S): All MAlb levels were within the upper limit of normal. After adjustment for liver function parameters, inflammatory indicators, and others, a reverse U-shaped relationship between MAlb and fetal growth was observed. Specifically, BW increased significantly with an increasing MAlb level when the MAlb level was <36.1 g/L (per g/L: ß = 36.8; 95% CI, 0.8, 72.7) but decreased with increasing the MAlb level when the MAlb level was >36.1 g/L (per g/L: ß = -15.1; 95% CI, -21.2, -8.9). There was a similar association between MAlb and birth length. Furthermore, the adjusted odd ratios of FGR across increasing tertiles of the MAlb levels were 1.0 (reference), 1.1 (0.7, 1.8), and 1.7 (1.0, 2.6). CONCLUSION(S): There was a reverse U-shaped association between MAlb and fetal growth. A higher MAlb level was associated with an increased risk of FGR. INTRODUCTION: We assessed the ability of the Child-Turcotte-Pugh score and the albumin-bilirubin grade to predict the outcomes of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients treated with transarterial chemoembolization. METHODS: We retrospectively assessed 158 patients with HCC who underwent transarterial chemoembolization. The ability of the Child-Turcotte-Pugh score and the albumin-bilirubin grade to predict patient survival was assessed using the Kaplan-Meier method. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to evaluate survival-predictive variables and the relationship between the obtained score and overall survival. RESULTS: Child-Turcotte-Pugh A (n = 102 (64.6%)) patients showed better overall survival than Child-Turcotte-Pugh B (n = 56 (35.4%)) patients (log-rank P = 0.017), while no significant difference in the overall survival between albumin-bilirubin ≤ 1 (n = 37 (23.4%)) and albumin-bilirubin > 1 (n = 121 (76.6%)) was detected (log-rank P = 0.140). Multivariate analysis identified alcoholic liver disease (P = 0.029), tumor size > 5 cm (P = 0.004), and serum alpha-fetoprotein > 200 ng/mL (P < 0.001) as independent predictive factors of mortality risk. A higher Child-Turcotte-Pugh score was positively associated with decreased overall survival (P = 0.031); however, a higher albumin-bilirubin grade showed marginally significant association (P = 0.088). CONCLUSIONS: The Child-Turcotte-Pugh score precisely categorized the outcomes of HCC in patients undergoing transarterial chemoembolization, and cirrhotic patients with Child-Turcotte-Pugh A will have a better overall survival than those with Child-Turcotte-Pugh B, regardless of HCC status. These results suggest that the Child-Turcotte-Pugh classification system is a more powerful tool to predict patient outcomes than the albumin-bilirubin grading system.

Objetivo: avaliar a associação entre qualidade de vida e estado nutricional de pacientes em hemodiálise, segundo medidas antropométricas e bioquímicas. Métodos: estudo transversal realizado com 1.024 pacientes de 11 centros de hemodiálise de uma região metropolitana da região sudeste do Brasil. Resultados: por meio da regressão linear múltipla, foram identificados os preditores nutricionais de cada domínio da qualidade de vida. Destacamos a albumina sérica, o Índice de Massa Corporal (IMC) e a circunferência da cintura, dentre as medidas associadas tanto a saúde física quanto a mental desta população. Conclusão: a inadequação do estado nutricional está associada a pior qualidade de vida física e mental de indivíduos em hemodiálise. Além do monitoramento do estado nutricional, a avaliação nutricional prediz a qualidade de vida e torna-se uma ferramenta fundamental para um melhor desfecho de saúde, uma vez que a baixa qualidade de vida é um dos principais problemas desta população.


Objective: to evaluate the association between quality of life and nutritional status of hemodialysis patients, according to anthropometric and biochemical measurements. Methods: cross-sectional study conducted with 1,024 patients from 11 hemodialysis centers in a metropolitan region of southeastern Brazil. Results: through multiple linear regression, the nutritional predictors of each domain of quality of life were identified. We highlight serum albumin, Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference, among the measures associated with both physical and mental health in this population. Conclusion: inadequate nutritional status is associated with worse physical and mental quality of life in hemodialysis individuals. In addition to monitoring the nutritional status, nutritional assessment predicts quality of life and becomes a fundamental tool for a better health outcome, since low quality of life is one of the main problems in this population.

Además de monitorear el estado nutricional, la evaluación nutricional predice la calidad de vida y se convierte en una herramienta fundamental para un mejor resultado de salud, ya que la baja calidad de vida es uno de los principales problemas en esta población.
